All That Jazz and More!
Charlotte, NC - “We hope to see
Charlotte’s many music lovers on Sunday, October 22nd from 5:00 –
8:00 pm as we continue our year-long celebration of jazz,” says
Afro-American Cultural Center President & CEO, Deon Bradley. “We guarantee
an evening of wonderful sounds and an enjoyable experience as we showcase
this month’s talent.”
All
That Jazz, AACC’s monthly jazz
series sponsored by First Charter Bank, will include featured artist,
Carl Winters, in October. The San
Franciso-based musician — also known as
“The Kalimbo King”— will open the
show. Winters has established a complete kalimba repertoire and travels
nationally and internationally, performing jazz, rhythm and blues, pop and
original songs. Traditionally, the kalimba, or African thumb piano, is used
to call upon the ancestors in parts of Africa. Winters channels Africa’s
mores and significance while expressing the qualities of an often
misunderstood and misinterpreted musical instrument.
Musician
Tyrone Jefferson, born in New York City and raised in Charlotte, and the
band Going Through Changes
(GTC) perform during the second half of the show. For almost 20 years, to
rave reviews, Jefferson played with legendary singer James Brown and is a
consummate composer, arranger, and trombonist. He has recorded with L.L.
Cool J and Public Enemy and has played with jazz artists Frank Foster, Slide
Hampton, Carla Cook, and Alex Bugon. Going Through Changes (G.T.C.) together
with Jefferson are featured every fourth Sunday at the Afro-American
Cultural Center.
Admission
for All That Jazz
is $8 for AACC members and $10 for non-members.
During
the 2006 – 2007 season, AACC’s educational outreach initiatives and visual
and performing arts presentations will continue to explore the development
of “America’s classical music” from it origins in Africa to its present-day
fusion of styles.
Established in 1976, the Afro-American Cultural Center exists to present,
preserve, and promote African American art, culture and history for the
education and enjoyment of all.
