Afro-American Cultural Center Hires Diamond As Development Officer

CHARLOTTE – Former Charlotte resident Patrick Diamond, who most recently was deputy housing commissioner for the City of Chicago, has joined the Afro-American Cultural Center (AACC) as development officer.

“Patrick Diamond is a proven professional who has a track record of accomplishments,” said Earl Leake, AACC board chair, who made the announcement today. “He can help the Afro-American Cultural Center identify resources necessary to carry us into our new home in the Wachovia First Street Cultural Campus in center city.”

Diamond will work closely with Deon Bradley, president and chief executive officer of the AACC. Bradley said he and Diamond together will raise funds necessary to enhance the role of the AACC in the Greater Charlotte region.

“Patrick has many contacts in Charlotte and he can help the AACC fulfill the promise of our new 44,000-square-foot facility that will open in 2009,” Bradley said. That building at the corner of South Tryon and Stonewall streets will be named for Harvey B. Gantt, the city’s first black mayor.

“I’m extremely excited about returning ‘home’ to Charlotte to serve in this important role,” said Diamond. “Already, Deon and I are working to identify AACC funding prospects and support opportunities. My goal is to meet our financial needs and goals by appealing to individuals, families and businesses and outlining the benefits of supporting the mission of the Cultural Center.”

Diamond, who has worked in Charlotte for both Bank of America and Duke Energy Corporation, returns after serving the last seven years as deputy commissioner in the Department of Housing for the City of Chicago. He was responsible for managing the community programs division of the housing department with a staff of 25 and an annual budget of $18 million.

He was manager of business and economic development for Duke Energy in Charlotte from 1996 through 1999. Before that, he was Duke’s district manager in Winston-Salem. From 1991 to 1993, he was assistant district manager for Duke in Charlotte.

Diamond was a manager in community reinvestment for Bank of America predecessor NCNB from 1989 to 1991. Previously, he was manager of general services for the bank.

In Chicago, Diamond’s civic activities included membership on the Board of Directors of the Southside Community Art Center, the Art Institute’s Leadership Advisory Committee and the Art Institute’s Prints and Drawings Committee.

He holds a master’s of Education from Boston University where he also earned an undergraduate degree in History.

Diamond’s wife Judy was chief executive of the Chicago YWCA and most recently was associate dean of the Friedman School at Tufts University in Boston.

The Diamonds’ son Chad is a graduate of Country Day School in Charlotte and Davidson College. He is completing his final year at Northwestern University School of Law.
