Objective

The
Afro-American Cultural Center offers learning experiences to present and celebrate art, history and culture that:

  • Engage participants in enrichment experiences to embrace cultural arts and heritage with stimulating educational activities.

  • Structure a framework that fosters a growing interest in the arts.

Structure

  • Exposure to art forms through absorbing group involvement and physical action

  • Inspiring creative expression, enhancing academics, and exploring character education traits through interactive programming.

  • Involvement in critical thinking workshops that promote in-depth comprehension.

Programming Options

Lecture-Demonstration Assembly Format

  • Interactive, educational, single event for presentation in a gymnasium or large multipurpose room for audiences of 50 – 500+. 

  • Tailored to be appropriate for youth, teen or adult audiences [* very appropriate for younger audiences]

Enjoy the Afro-Caribbean movement and the music as the harmonious melodies of the
Caribbean and the exotic rhythms of Africa blend to produce excitement that touches you with culture and history

Experience the civil rights movement and its impact on America through the inspiring music of that powerful and traumatic era

Connecting historical and cultural significance of dance forms with the era. [Funga, Ring Shout, Black Bottom, etc]

Workshop Format

  • Multi-sessions, hands-on activity providing academic and character education enrichment for 15-40 participants of any age

  • ALSO an optional single [add-on] session accompanying a lec-demo to provide in-depth, reflective discussion of the topic

Investigate the global and environmental need for recycling and our cultural alikeness through a historic review of the book “Galimoto” about South African children and their toys. Create wire art toys, while exploring geography, history, and math shapes

“The Wards of Charlotte”                                                                     LaTanya Johnson and Jermaine Lee
Creatively assume the roles of African Americans in
Charlotte during the 1950’s era.  Learn about their lives and spend time ‘at Home with Loretta and Nathaniel’.  Visit the Afro-American Cultural Center’s Shotgun house living installation and fictionalized home of Loretta & Nathaniel Grier.
