Afro-American Cultural Center Will Unveil Its New Name At Jazzy Holiday CHARLOTTE – To highlight of this year’s Jazzy Holiday luncheon, Charlotte’s Afro-American Cultural Center will announce the official name of its new facility planned for South Tryon Street. The AACC announced in April that it will name the 44,000 square foot facility for former Charlotte Mayor Harvey B. Gantt, but did not specify the official name. AACC Chairman Earl Leake will unveil the new name on December 7 at the Westin Hotel during the organization’s annual Jazzy Holiday luncheon. A seasonal fixture in Charlotte, it will start with an 11:30 a.m. reception. “We anxious and excited to reveal exactly what our new name will be,” said Leake. “There is no more deserving person than Harvey Gantt, and we want to associate ourselves with him for a long time to come.” About 600 attendees are expected for Jazzy Holiday, said Deon Bradley, AACC president and chief executive. Other highlights include announcement of the 2007 Spirit of the Center award recipients and lots of holiday music. Gantt is a principal at Gantt Huberman Architects of Charlotte and remains active in many civic organizations. He served as Charlotte’s mayor from 1983-1987 and also completed three terms as a city councilman. He ran twice as the Democratic nominee for US senator from North Carolina. The naming of the AACC building for Gantt includes a drive to raise $5 million as part of the $83 million Campaign for Cultural Facilities. That fund will provide operating revenue for the facilities in the new arts complex planned as part of a Wachovia Corporation mixed-use project on South Tryon Street. Besides the AACC, that Wachovia First Street Cultural Campus will house the Bechtler Museum of Art, the Mint Museum and Knight Theater. When the new AACC center opens in 2009, it will feature state-of-the-art galleries, space for youth programs, presentation areas and a multi-purpose theater/lecture hall. The four-level building also will have a roof-top terrace. X X X For More Information: Ellison Clary, (704) 344-0893, (704) 763-729 - eclary@carolina.rr.com |
