PERFORMING ARTS

Wynton MarsalisTerrance BlanchardThe roof and walls of the old Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church have sure proven sturdy over the years!  The Afro-American Cultural Center’s indoor attic theater and outdoor amphitheater have witnessed the musical testimony of many local and national performers including classical and jazz artist, Wynton Marsalis, Jazz Trumpeters Tom Browne, Irvin Mayfield, Donald Harrison and Terrance Blanchard, Afro-Cuban Vocalist, Veronica Ortega, and Jazz Pianist/Vocalist, Loston Harris.

The Center’s Night Sounds Concert Music Series, brings jazz music to the forefront in Charlotte.

The dance and acting talents of professional groups such as the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company have graced the stage, while promising youth have shared the spotlight via the Center’s Teen Jazz, Dance and Drama Ensembles.

Whether it is a cultural celebration with a steel drum band, salsa dancers, or a hip slappin,’ party snappin’ college step show, the Center’s Performing Arts programs are second to none.

When people come to perform here, they love it! They seem to really enjoy the intimate environment of the attic theater, and the sense of community the outdoor amphitheater lends to their performance. As more artists and promoters learn of our space, our ability to bring Charlotte once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see and hear some of the best entertainment in the world increases.” Says Lisa Roland, Director of Center Operations.

Upcoming performances can be found in the Afro-American Cultural Center’s Calendar of Events
