Gantt Center to Host 2012 DNC Delegate Welcome Event September 2, 2012
The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture was chosen along with 11 other unique venues to host welcome events for approximately 6,000 delegates coming to Charlotte for the 2012 Democratic National Convention. This is a major feat for the Center and will allow delegates and visitors to celebrate the institution’s rich legacy of African-American art, history and culture.
The delegate welcome events will be held on September 2, 2012, and divided between 12 venues around the region. At the Charlotte in 2012 Convention Host Committee press conference, Co-Chair of the Committee, Mayor Anthony Foxx stated, “This announcement demonstrates how hard we are working to showcase the entire Charlotte region while maximizing the economic impact of the 2012 convention.
"Many Charlotteans believe that the city would not be as strong as it is today if not for the leadership and vision of former Mayor, Harvey B. Gantt,” said David Taylor, Gantt Center President & CEO. “It seems only fitting for the DNC to hold their event at our Center, his namesake, and reaffirms us as a leading venue for hosting important functions.”
A party for 15,000 media members will kick off the convention on September 1st at the NC Music Factory. Delegate welcome events on September 2nd will also be held at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Carolina Raptor Center, The Charlotte Museum of History, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, Discovery Place, Duke Mansion, Levine Museum of the New South, Mint Museum Uptown, NASCAR Hall of Fame, U.S. National Whitewater Center and Wadsworth Estate.
