Harvey B. Gantt Center Partners with Johnson C. Smith University to Promote Know Your Plate Health Awareness Program

The Harvey B. Gantt Center and Johnson C. Smith University cordially invite you to attend Know Your Plate on May 12, starting at 12:30 PM. The Know Your Plate project is an innovative and creative approach that focuses on obesity among the African American community in Charlotte and promotes health and fitness awareness. During this cross-disciplinary project, students from JCSU’s Computer Sciences, Communication Arts, and Visual Arts programs developed an interactive game, a skit, and a poster session using resources from the National Library of Medicines / MedlinePlus online collection. As a result, the project uses art and technology to promote healthy eating and a balanced diet.

Johnson C. Smith University is one of four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) awarded a grant from the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation and the National Library of Medicine. The funds from this grant were used to promote the use of the National Library of Medicine’s online health information for eliminating disparities in health status within the minority population.

The community can learn about health disparities in a fun and innovative way, through a collaborative partnership with the Beatties Ford Branch of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library, Central Piedmont Community College, Harvey B. Gantt Center for African- American Arts+Culture and Kamit Natural Foods.
