Stephen Hayes: Cash Crop Exhibition Awarded Coveted BOB Award for Best Art Exhibition
Gantt Center exhibition Stephen Hayes: Cash Crop was awarded Charlotte Magazine’s BOB (Best of the Best) 2012 Award for Best Art Exhibition. Since 1997, Charlotte Magazine has dedicated its May issue to the Best of the Best and recognize the city’s finest in arts & entertainment, food and drink, nightlife, and more. All winners are selected by the magazine’s experts - the editors and writers.
“I am honored and flattered to receive this award - it means a great deal to be recognized in this way”, said Mr. Hayes. I would like to thank Charlotte Magazine and I am also grateful to the Gantt Center for hosting my exhibition and giving the community and visitors the chance to experience it.”
Stephen Hayes; Cash Crop is a powerful exhibition about the transatlantic slave trade and engages us in a much larger conversation about today’s cash crops. Hayes’ installation of fifteen life-size figures encourages viewers to imagine themselves squeezed into a hull of a ship crossing the Atlantic and then asks one to consider what can be done to stop today’s human rights violations. Cash Crop invites viewers to walk into an emotional, physical and psychic space to confront the past, present, and future.
See this amazing exhibition before it ends May 27, 2012.
