Guided Tours

Do you have a school group, community organization, sorority, church or club whose members would enjoy a guided tour at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture? We offer guided and self-guided tours of our exhibitions throughout the year. Guided tours require a minimum of 10 participants, are led by volunteer museum docents and last one hour. Self-guided groups of 10 or more are advised to contact Guest Services in advance to assure that there is space available. Schedule a group tour by contacting Guest Services at (704) 547-3700. Please note, all guided tours should be scheduled two-weeks in advance and if your group arrives more than 15 minutes late, they will have to forgo a docent and do a self-guided tour.

School Tours

Guided tours are available to groups of elementary, middle and high school students Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. All school tours, guided or self-guided, must be scheduled with Guest Services. Guided tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

Admission

Group admission (for groups of 10 or more): $5.00 per person

School/after school/camp group admission (groups of 10 or more): $5.00 per student, chaperone or parent

Group tour rates are based on 10 or more persons when you make your reservation. If your group is less than 10 on the day of your visit you will be charged the regular admission rate per person.

Please note, these prices do not include special events or exhibits.

For Students

Please leave your coats, backpacks and large bags at school or on the bus. They may not be taken into the galleries and will have to be left unattended.
Stay with your group at all times. Do not walk away with strangers.
For your safety, please walk, do not run. It is important that you do not run up and down the stairs and in the galleries.
Be respectful and kind to the museum educator (docent) leading your group.
Be curious! We love to hear your questions and comments. Please raise your hand.
Please use your polite "inside voice".
Be careful and considerate of others.
Food, drinks, candy or gum are not allowed in the galleries.
Please do not touch the artwork. Special care must be taken to preserve the artwork and maintain the presentation of each exhibition. The oils on your skin will damage the surface of a painting, discolor bronze or rust steel. Please help us to preserve the art for other visitors and for future generations.
Do not lean on the artwork, walls or display cases (either to write or for physical support).
Photographs are not to be taken of the artwork. The bright light from flash photography is harmful to sensitive papers and fabrics.
We kindly request that you turn off your cell phones when entering the museum.
Running, jumping or other objectionable behavior is prohibited.

For Teachers and Chaperones

Be sure to count your students before you arrive and before you leave the Gantt Center.
Each student should have a name tag with the following information, their name, grade level and school name.
Join the discussions, encourage your students to participate and assist them in relating their Gantt Center visit to what they have been studying.
Teachers and chaperones are responsible for maintaining discipline.
For the student's security, please be sure they know the names of the adults in charge of their group.
Please remember that the museum educator (docent) is in charge of the tour. Please do not answer questions that are intended for students.
Please remind your students of the Gantt Center Cultural Visit Protocol.

Group Size

A guided tour can accommodate 10 to 30 students, unless otherwise noted. It is required that school groups have one (1) adult (teacher/chaperone) for every 10 students. Groups of very young and/or special needs children must provide a smaller student to chaperone ratio.

Arrival Time

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled tour. If your group arrives more than 15 minutes after the scheduled time, we will be unable to provide a docent for your tour. Instead, your tour will be self-guided.
